Boerne Champion finished just outside the top 10 in the final UIL Lone Star Cup standings for the 2025-26 school year.
Champion tied for 11th with College Station A&M Consolidated and Corpus Christi Flour Bluff after all those schools earned 71 points in the 5A standings. Smithson Valley was the only 5A San Antonio area school to finish ahead of the Chargers after the Rangers were ninth with 74 points after winning state titles in football and girls soccer.
Every academic year, UIL schools earn points based on their performance in athletics and other extra- curricular activities. In sports, a district title and a playoff berth are worth two points each and every postseason victory is worth an additional two points, while a state title picks up even more points for each school.
Points are earned in Team Tennis, Cross Country, Water Polo, Marching Band, Military Marching Band, Volleyball, Robotics BEST, Football, Congress, Spirit, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling, Mariachi, Film, Basketball, Robotics FIRST, Soccer, Academics, One-Act Play, Theatrical Design, Track & Field, Golf, Tennis, Softball and Baseball.
At the end of the school year, the points are counted and the UIL announces winners in each of the six classifications from 1A – 6A.
Champion picked up points in 11 different categories with the most coming from their aquatics programs that earned a combined 38 of their 71 points. The Lady Chargers swim team won state to tally 10 points, while the Champion boys and girls water polo teams both played at the state tournament and collected 14 points each. (The scoring is different when there are playoff rounds vs. sports where they just have district, regionals and state like cross country, swim and golf.)
Champion has a UIL Lone Star Cup championship under their belt that the Chargers won for the 2010-2011 school year. They were a 4A school during the 10-11 school year when 5A was the largest classification in the state.
Boerne High
Boerne High was outside the top 100 in the final 5A standings and tied for 109th with 23 points.
Boerne’s football team earned the most points this year for the Hounds with 12 points after they played in the state semifinals. Team tennis tallied six points, while girls basketball and baseball picked up two points each after making the playoffs and spirit scored one point to round out their scoring.
The Greyhounds finished third in 4A in 2023-24 and were second in 4A during the 2022-23 school year for their highest finish ever in the Lone Star Cup.
