Boerne Champion rising senior Kate Canales claimed a national championship after she captured first place in the 50-yard breaststroke at the USA Junior Nationals held Tuesday in California.
Canales, a University of Florida commit, clocked in at 32.04 for first place, edging the second-place finisher from Chicago, Grace Koenig-Song, who posted 32.08.
Texas A&M-bound Ella McWhorter placed third in 32.27, ahead of University of North Carolina commit Cate Pawlaski, who was fourth with a 32.29.
Canales also competed in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Junior Nationals where she was seventh with a time of 1:10.69. The top time at the event was 1:09.28, turned in by Sofia Szymanowski.
Canales helped the Lady Chargers win the last two 5A UIL state swim championships and was named the swimmer of the meet last February after she earned four gold medals, two in individual events and two more golds in relays.
At the state meet, her time in the 100 breaststroke set a new 5A conference record and she also contributed to two more 5A conference records in the 200 medley and 400-free relays.
