Boerne Champion opened its 2026 fall team tennis season with a victory over Northside Clark at the Charger courts on Wednesday morning.
The Champion stringers clubbed the Cougars, 13-6, to start the year at 1-0.
The two sides agreed to put on extra matches and played a total of 28 matches, with the Chargers winning 21 of those and dropping seven of them.
Champion had a good start to doubles play and was up 5-2 before they went to singles matches. The Chargers picked up eight more wins in singles competition and dropped four of them before they went to extra matches to get as many players on the court as possible early in the season.
The Chargers continued their season Friday and Saturday with those matches at home as well. Champion hosted 5A Friendswood on Friday and welcomed 6A Lake Travis on Saturday morning. They’ll next play Aug. 14-15 at the Northside ISD tourney.
Champion is coached by Kristin Cantu after she took over for her husband Joey Cantu, who left the school to become the Pearsall ISD athletic director. Kristin was the interim coach after Joey left last spring and she slid into the head coaching spot later in the spring.
