Half of Boerne ISD schools Purple Star campuses

Designation honors military-friendly schools

The Boerne Independent School District can now boast that half of its campuses are Purple Star schools, considered the most military-friendly in the state.

The Texas Education Agency and Commissioner Mike Morath on Friday released the newest additions to the list — Boerne High School, Boerne Champion High School, Boerne Middle School North, Voss Middle School and Cibolo Creek and Van Raub elementary schools.

The schools were added to the state’s lineup of the most military-friendly campuses in Texas. Last year, Curington and Fair Oaks Ranch elementary schools numbered among the 98 campuses statewide to achieve Purple Star status.

The Purple Star Campus Designation was created by the Legislature in 2019 to honor schools that have a campus-based military liaison for families, create and maintain an easily accessible webpage connecting military-related families with resources, have transition programs for families with military ties, and offer initiatives that honor service families.

“We are honored that so many military families choose Boerne as their home – either while serving their country or after retiring,” said Superintendent Kristin Craft. “Our community is made better because they’re here, and it’s a privilege to help servicemen and women and their families acclimate to our community.”

Purple Star Campus Designations are given for two years at a time.

In Boerne ISD, the goal is for all BISD campuses to achieve and maintain the distinction within the next few years, Craft said.

“It’s just another amazing facet of the ‘Boerne Advantage’ and the lengths we go to in order to make sure people feel that they belong,” Craft added.

According to district officials, the Boerne Advantage is a framework of core tenets that showcase the school system’s community spirit, values and learning environment.

Many military families have settled in the area because of connections to Joint Base San Antonio, the Department of Defense’s largest joint base combining the resources of Fort Sam Houston, and Lackland and Randolph Air Force bases.

“We are honored that so many military families choose Boerne as their home.”
