Ms. Veteran America finalist, Whiskey and Warriors raise funds for homeless female service members
The Whiskey and Warriors event Saturday hosted by Ms. Veteran America finalist Magan Martin raised over $6,000, which will aid fighting homelessness for female veterans.
Over 40 people attended the casino- themed event at The Kendall to gamble and bid on auction items, which included a Spurs championship ring and Nolan Ryan baseball memorabilia.
“We are raising money tonight for Final Salute,” Martin said. “They work with homelessness and veterans, specifically for women, veterans and their children. (The organization provides) emergency housing, whether it’s a domestic violence issue or a female veteran is facing homelessness or because of job loss.”
Magan Martin is a finalist in the Ms. Veteran America pageant. Part of the pageant requires her to organize fundraisers such as the Whiskey and Warriors event, which raised $6,000 for Final Salute, a nonprofit that combats homelessness for female veterans.
Star photo by Veronica Rector According to Martin, the nonprofit also works with veterans battling drug addiction, alcoholism and post-traumatic stress disorder.
“It doesn’t matter what state they’re in,” Martin said. “Final Salute swoops in and gets them either emergency money or housing.”
Martin, a mom who lives in the Boerne area, served eight years in the Marine Corps and worked for about a decade as a police officer in San Diego, California, according to her biography.
Part of Martin’s pageant requirements for Ms. Veteran America included supporting events such as the Whiskey and Warriors fundraiser.
“If I win the title and crown, we get to represent the nonprofit for all of 2027,” she said “Part of winning the crown is fundraising. That is a big part of this entire competition.”
Martin previously hosted a Whiskey and Warriors event in March, and because of that event’s success, she worked with Joey Hummel, co-founder of another veterans nonprofit, Reel Warriors, to organize a second event this past Saturday.
“She (Martin) has done an amazing job, and we commemorate her,” Hummel said.
All told, the event raised $6,000.
Sponsors for the event included Black Rifle Coffee, Reel Warriors, Heroes Hut, Boerne Content Studios, Monkee’s of Fair Oaks and Health 210.
“When it comes to the question about why we’ve sponsored this event, this is an amazing cause,” said Nigel Fisher of Health 210. “Taking care of people that need us in this moment, so that’s why we’re here.”
Martin will be heading to Tampa, Florida, on Oct. 10 to compete in the final portion of the Ms. Veteran America pageant.
According to the organization, the purpose of Ms. Veteran America is “ to showcase ‘ The Woman Beyond the Uniform.’” Proceeds provide housing for homeless women veterans and their children, according to the organization’s website.
“Women veterans are currently the fastest growing homeless population in America. Over half of homeless women veterans are single mothers,” the site reads.
