SAN ANTONIO – Boerne may not have won a state championship last year, but they played with a “heart of a champion,” according to Coach Che Hendrix, on Friday.
The Greyhounds improved to 2-1, defeating Antonian Prep in an arm-pincher, 42-35 at Antonian Prep Stadium.
The Greyhounds scored on a keeper at the 1:06 mark in the fourth quarter to give themselves a one-score advantage.
Antonian attempted to send the game into overtime with a balanced offensive attack, but turned it over on downs following an incomplete pass from quarterback Jayce Toscano to Jaden Villarreal.
The turnover sealed the victory for the Greyhounds, which earned its second straight of the year after a season-opening loss at Flour Bluff.
Hendrix credited the Apaches for bringing their A-game, which included tying the game at 35-35 at the 6:04 mark following a keeper from Preston Jones and a two-point conversion involving a Toscano to Raleigh Strode pass.
“This was a fun game,” Hendrix said. “This is why you play the good teams. You want to get battle tested. We knew they were going to give us a handful offensively.”
Boerne took a 21-20 score into halftime, as Antonian failed to convert an extra point late in the first quarter. Both teams did not score in the second quarter.
Hutson Hendrix scored on a 25-yard keeper to give the Greyhounds a 27-20 advantage at the 6:27 mark in the third quarter.
Toscano scored on a running play of his own with 10.4 second left in the quarter to narrow the lead to one.
Just 31 seconds into the fourth, Boerne scored to give itself a 35-27 advantage.
Che Hendrix credited his team for playing competitive against an Apaches team that entered the contest with a 2-0 record.
“I learned our team has a lot of heart, guts and character,” he said. “It’s hard to stay in the fight when this is our third road game, and when the weather is hot, but I am proud of how hard we played.”
Boerne will bring its competitive spirit back home when they play Gregory-Portland on Friday, Sept.15 and attempt to go 3-1 for the season.
