Geneva off this week, preps for stretch run

The Geneva School of Boerne football team can certainly feel good going into its bye week.

The Eagles hosted Brentwood Christian last Thursday before going on break and fell behind 28-7 by halftime but rallied for the 49-43 overtime win over the Bears.

Geneva scored 42 points in the second half and OT and tallied 29 in the third quarter alone.

“It was a great game,” Eagles coach Grant Gaston said. “We definitely had momentum late in the game and our defense stepped up again in overtime.”

Geneva was trailing, took the lead and fell behind before tying it in the fourth quarter and then winning it in overtime.

Brentwood Christian was driving late in the fourth quarter and was at the Geneva 22-yard line but fumbled and Geneva’s K.P. Fitzgerald jumped on the loose ball to basically send it to overtime.

Gaston said he knew it would be a nip and tuck kind of a game.

“We knew Brentwood was very good and we felt like we were evenly matched and felt like it would be a close game regardless of who won,” Gaston said. “I’m not surprised it was that close of a game, that’s what we anticipated.”

After yielding 28 points through the first half, the Eagles only gave up 15 points the rest of the way.

“We took away the big play,” Gaston said. “Our defense improved and we made some changes but mainly not giving up the big play was the difference there.”

Once it went to overtime, Brentwood had the ball first and went for it on a 4th and 7 at the 23 instead of trying a roughly 40-yard field goal and didn’t convert.

It was Geneva’s turn with the ball and they scored in four plays after Jacob Rosenstiel ran in the ball from the 4-yard line on a 3rd and 1.

Rosenstiel ran for 4 TDs and threw for 3 more against the Austin school.

With a lot of two-way starters, Gaston said they are going to do their best to get everybody back at full strength for their stretch run which includes three district games.

“We’ve played seven games in a row, so we’ve had to change some things in practices and we’ll do that the next couple of weeks as we get our bodies fully healthy so we have a good run for district play,” Gaston said. “We played a lot of power-run football teams, so you’re taking a lot of hits. We’ve had a lot of body blows this year and our guys have taken care of themselves, hydrated and are eating right and you can tell it’s made a difference.”

Geneva opens district play next Friday at Corpus Christi John Paul II.

Geneva’s Noah Brunsvold (21) gallops with the ball during last week’s game against Brentwood Christian to end non-district play.
