Cougars win clash over Chargers

Even though College Station won Friday’s first-round contest over Boerne Champion with a lopsided score of 51-28, the final numbers don’t really indicate how close the contest was in the second half.

The Chargers made it a 10-point game late in the third quarter, but from there the Cougars outscored Champion 27-14, with their last 27 points coming in the final 14 minutes of the game.

Both teams played well, especially in the fourth quarter, as they combined for five touchdowns and 35 points before it ended.

College Station (10-1) will move on to the next round while the curtain comes down on Champion’s season with a record of 8-3.

The Cougars jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and were up 17-0 early in the second on a 36-yard field goal before Sawyer Bolli brought the Chargers back into the game.

Bolli took a handoff on a jet sweep and went 70 yards on a first-and-10 at the 30 to cap a 1-play drive and make it 17-7 after the Nathan Bell extra point.

College Station answered on its next possession with a 66-yard, 7-play drive and went up 24-7 by the middle of the second quarter.

The Cougars’ 17-point lead held until halftime, but the Chargers were able to cut the deficit to 10 points in the third quarter.

Kaleb Krause caught a 27-yard TD pass from Jordan Ballin and the Bell PAT made it 24-14.

Champion’s defense played well and forced three straight College Station punts in the third, but the Cougars finally broke through the Chargers D to punch it in.

College Station scored on a 5-yard run and missed the extra point but the lead was 30-14 to end the quarter.

That’s when College Station started to pull away.

The Cougars tallied three TDs in the final stanza and scored on their last three possessions before going into victory formation.

Champion went down swinging and scored twice in the final period. Ballin found Campbell Deberry in the end zone on a 35-yard pass in the fourth quarter.

With less than four minutes remaining in the game, Brock Browning took over at the quarterback position and marched the Chargers down the field for another score.

Browning hit Jackson Fancher on a 44-yard strike to make it 51-28 with 2:31 on the clock.

That turned out to be Champion’s final drive of the season after the Cougars were able to run out the remaining time after the kickoff.

The Chargers program will graduate about 40 seniors who helped the team make it to the playoffs after not making it last year.
