Jones’ sweet treats make it feel like Christmas in July

Jones’ sweet treats make it feel like Christmas in July

Located in the heart of Boerne is Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs, a senior living community where elders spend their days free from everyday stress.

This community offers an array of activities that help lighten the spirits of its residents during their stay. Every year during the peak of summer, the community hosts a Christmas in July celebration.

This gives residents an opportunity to enjoy the flavors, sounds and smells of Christmas a few months early.

Chery Jones, the community’s master baker, is behind all the flavors and smells during the Christmas celebration. She spends her time at Morningside baking “bite-size pieces of joy,” as described by most of the residents.

For the past six years she has crafted hundreds of Christmasy baked goods that she and her husband, Lowell Jones, distribute to all members of the Morningside community.

“Baking is one of my main passions. It’s a hobby for me,” Chery Jones said. “I began when I was four and haven’t stopped. Breads are my specialty and I challenge myself with (baking) different kinds of cookies.”

As a retired nurse and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Jones said she has always known what it takes to make someone feel great. Her prescription, of choice, includes her cookies, breads, fudge and cakes.

She is a self-taught baker who has spent most of her life perfecting her hobby. She has created a cookbook filled with family recipes dedicated to her mother and grandmother.

“I wanted to preserve (the recipes) so that my kids and grandkids would know them and enjoy them,” she said. “I want to honor my mother and grandmother. They are special- all the things they did for us, I want to do the same for my children.”

Jones hopes to continue baking for as long as she can. She knows that the senior living community will continue to support her holiday hobby and anticipates many more opportunities to bake and share her bite-size pieces of joy.
