Hounds celebrate 100 years of football in 2024

Boerne High will celebrate 100 years of Greyhound football this season as the BHS program steps up to the 5A ranks for at least the next two years.

With so much growth in the greater San Antonio area, high schools are popping up everywhere it seems but at 100 years, there aren’t many schools that have Boerne beat as far as longevity.

BHS coach Che Hendrix said it’s special to be associated with this type of celebration.

“It’s not just the history of the football program but the school, it’s cool to be a part of something that’s been around this long,” Hendrix said. “It’s really fun for me personally and for the players to connect with some of the players from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.”

Boerne ISD will celebrate 100 years of Greyhound football against Laredo United on Sept. 5.

A look at the district Because Boerne moved up to 5A, they’ll get the chance to renew their rivalries with Alamo Heights and Kerrville Tivy.

Before Boerne Champion opened up, those were Boerne’s two main rivals. The Hounds played those two schools over the years but it was either in scrimmages or in non-district but now it’ll be a district game and Hendrix said he and the team are ready for the challenge.

“It’s exciting, rivalries are what make high school athletics so special, I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “They’re such good programs and the quality of the games will mean something. Alamo Heights is ranked third or fourth in the state, so they’re pretty good.”

Also in the district is Veterans Memorial, Victoria West, Harlandale and McCollum to go with Alamo Heights, Kerrville Tivy and Boerne.

Hendrix said he knows there will be some adjustments stepping up to the 5A level but added that they’ve played quality 5A opponents over the years in non-district and noted that football is football, regardless of the level.

“No matter what A you play at, 4A, 5A or 6A, it’s still about you taking your personnel and being the best you can be,” he said. “I don’t think how we prepare for any of the teams will be any different.”

Hendrix added that he isn’t too familiar with the 5A teams in the area, especially those in their district.

“We’ll go one game at a time, but I don’t know much about some of the teams we’re playing,” he said. “We haven’t seen some of them play and we haven’t played some of them.”

A look at the team

Jaxon Baize, the starter for BHS in the 4A state championship game in 2022, returns for his senior year.

Baize was hurt last year in Boerne’s first game but returned late in the season. While Baize was out, he was replaced by Hank Hendrix who stepped up and filled in nicely, especially for a freshman playing at the varsity level.

Hank’s coach and father, Che Hendrix, said both will see action this year.

“They have similar skill sets, the way they process the game and how they get rid of the ball,” he said. “We have two great quarterbacks.”

Blocking for whichever QB is in the game will be lineman Logan Schram. The 6-foot-6, 305-pounder has committed to TCU.

Other players to watch this year for the Greyhounds according to Texas Football Magazine are Hutson Hendrix, Braden Bays, Brooks Perez, Adam Hicks, Blake Burkholder, Ben Bays, Cole Durham, Keegan Fischer, Logan Fritcher, Walker Hill, Matthew Garrison and Ryan Hooper.
