Matadors win shootout over Chargers, 73-66

Champion hosted Seguin for a football game Friday night at Boerne ISD Stadium and a track meet broke out between the schools.

The Chargers and Matadors tallied 19 touchdowns and two field goals and combined for 139 points as Seguin went on to win Friday’s high-scoring affair, 73-66.

It’s a stinging loss for a Champion team that will have two weeks to think about Friday’s homecoming loss before 6,017 fans.

The Chargers slip to 0-2 in district and 3-2 overall. They have a bye week coming up and won’t play again until Oct. 11 when they visit New Braunfels.

Champion and Seguin scored in every quarter as the Chargers had four touchdowns in the first and three in the second, while the Matadors tallied five TDs in the half.

There were a lot of offensive highlights for the Chargers in the first half and one of them was Nathan Bell booting a 51-yard field goal right before the break to give Champion a 52-37 lead at intermission.

While both defenses gave up a lot of points, Seguin managed to slow down the Chargers a little in the second half, while the Matadors offense kept rolling.

Seguin forced three Champion punts in the third, while the Matadors tallied three TDs in the period and outscored the Chargers, 22-7 and took their first lead of the game at 59-52 with 2:59 remaining in the stanza.

Champion scored late in the period and tied it up at 59-59 but the Matadors took the opening kickoff of the fourth quarter and marched 11 plays and 66 yards for a score to pull ahead, 66-59.

Champion missed a field goal on its next drive but Ethan Jensen recovered a fumble for the Chargers that was knocked loose by Roman Flugence.

The Chargers scored one play after the turnover when Julian Navarrete hit William Burgess and it was tied at 66-66 with 3:15 left. But that was enough time for the Matadors to get down the field.

Seguin QB Corey Dailey capped their next drive with a 1-yard plunge and the Matadors pulled ahead, 73-66.

Champion still had 1:05 left and a couple of time outs. They moved the ball to the Seguin 35 but a Hail Mary-type pass with no time on the clock fell incomplete and the Matadors held on for the win.
