Lady Hounds drop district match to Warriors

Boerne High hosted district front-runner Pieper Tuesday night at Greyhound Gym in a 26-5A volleyball match.

The Lady Warriors showed why they’re undefeated in district after they went on to post a 25-10, 25-16, 25-17 straight-set victory over the Boerne girls.

BHS is 18-9 overall and 3-4 in district. The Lady Greyhounds had another tough one Friday as they go from facing the first-place team in 26-5A to playing the second-place squad in New Braunfels.

The Unicorns are 5-2 in the district and Friday’s match closed out the first round of district for the teams in 26-5A.

Boerne is currently sixth in the district and they’ll have to do some work in the second round if they’re going to make the playoffs.

Senior Kinsley Sawyer said they need to buckle down once second-round play starts next week.

“We know who we probably could have taken some sets from and who we could have played tougher,” she said. “We just need to come out stronger and play as a team. I think the main thing is to just keep pushing.”

The Greyhounds moved up to 5A this year and another team captain and senior, Ava Rocchio, said they all knew it would be a challenge stepping up a classification.

“It’s a lot more competitive than what we’re used to, so I really like the change. The intensity level is a lot higher and it gives us a challenge,” Rocchio said. “The games are competitive and it’s an adrenaline rush, especially against teams that are really good.”

Boerne’s third team captain and another senior, Calynn Ramos, said she’s enjoying the competition at the 5A level.

“It’s a lot more competitive and there are a lot more tighter games,” she said. “We need more stamina and more energy to push through first sets. We have to stay together as a team and not get down on each other.”

All three captains said they loved the atmosphere when they hosted Boerne Champion in the first round of district before a sold-out Greyhound Gym.

BHS and Champion meet at Charger Gym in the second round on Oct. 15 and all three said they’re looking forward to it.

Another packed house is expected even though the schools are on fall break. Their first-round meeting was on a Friday night when both BISD football teams were on the road so those associated with the football programs will have the chance to attend.

“All our football boys will be there, so it’ll be fun,” Ramos said.

Bella Pettet and Paige Stegall both finished with 6 kills on Tuesday, while Rocchio, Aubree Stegall and Holly Reeder all recorded 4 kills.

Aubree Stegall and Kaylie Bourn both dropped in one ace, Rocchio and Bourn had 2 blocks each, Haley Wheeler came up with 10 digs, while Lauren Magnus, Presley Mullins and Sawyer tallied 4 digs apiece.

Ramos led the team in assists with 12 and Magnus added 11 assists.
