3 Hounds compete at regional tennis tourney

The Boerne High tennis program sent three athletes to compete in two events at this week’s Region IV-5A tennis tournament held in Corpus Christi this week.

Owen Labay was entered in boys singles, while teammates Ben Rowe and Justin Barraza were entered in boys doubles at the regional tourney that started Wednesday and wrapped up Thursday.

Labay began tournament play in boys singles and was defeated in the first round by Eduardo Pastor from McAllen High School, 6-4, 6-4.

Rowe and Barraza won their opening match in boys doubles against Dylan Cortez and Zane Marin of Southwest Legacy in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.

Up next on Wednesday, Rowe and Barraza faced Michael Le and Lachlan Prouatt from Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial in the quarterfinals, and it was a battle.

Barraza and Rowe took the first set, 7-6, but dropped the next two, 6-4, 6-2, to end the Boerne tennis season.

The top three finishers in five different categories at regionals – boys singles, girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles – head to the state tournament scheduled for this coming Thursday and Friday, May 15-16, in San Antonio to be held at the NEISD and NISD courts.
