A strong second half propelled the Boerne High football team over Somerset Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium as the Greyhounds closed out non-district play.
Boerne beat the Bulldogs, 42-21, thanks to six Grant Sweeney TD passes and outscored the visitors from Somerset in the second half, 28-7.
The Greyhounds close out non-district at 4-0 and open league play Friday at Alamo Heights.
BHS head coach Brett Sawyer is grateful for the win but said he doesn’t feel like his team is firing on all cylinders just yet.
“I thought in the second half we played much better, but we still haven’t played a full game. We feel like we haven’t played four quarters the way we wanted to,” he said. “We’re still growing up; we’re not quite the team we want to be yet.”
The teams traded touchdowns in the first half before the Greyhounds grabbed the momentum over the last two quarters.
Jacob Hicks had the first score of the game on an 18-yard TD pass from Sweeney, but Somerset tallied the next two scores to take the lead. John Alvarez hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Adrian Buentello, and later Alvarez scored early in the second, and the Bulldogs were ahead, 14-7.
After a 15-play drive stalled for Somerset in the second quarter on a missed field goal, the Greyhounds answered right away. Boerne went 74 yards in 37 seconds and tied it right before the half on a Sweeney scoring strike to Beau Dayoc that went for 17 yards. The Diego Jimenez extra point knotted it up at 14-14 at the break.
It was all Greyhounds in the second half after they tallied the next four touchdowns to put the game out of reach. Zach Freasier hauled in a 99-yard touchdown pass from Sweeney after a Bulldogs punt pinned Boerne at their own 1-yard line.
The longest an offensive play can be is 99 yards and the Hounds have hit a few of those in their history so that one tied the record.
“It’s got to be a record or least tied one,” Sawyer said. “He burned them.”
Kole Traylor intercepted a Buentello pass on Somerset’s next drive and the Greyhounds scored again a few minutes later. Lane Aaron snagged a short pass from Sweeney on third and goal at the 5 and it was 28-14.
On the ensuing kickoff, Jimenez managed to bounce it off one of the Somerset players and the Greyhounds recovered and had another chance at a score, but Kaden Isbell picked off a Sweeney pass to end the threat.
Before the interception, the Greyhounds ran a trick play after Sweeney pitched it to Freasier, who threw it to Hicks for a big gainer, but it was called back because a lineman was downfield. Sawyer said the penalty took away some of their momentum and added that shouldn’t be the case.
“If we want to be the kind of team we’re aiming for, that one call can’t deflate you,” he said.
Boerne tacked on two fourth-quarter touchdowns after Logan Kolle caught a 10-yard TD pass from Sweeney and then Hicks capped the Boerne scoring with a 32-yard touchdown toss Sweeney to make it 42-14.
The Bulldogs tacked a late score to cut the lead in half at 42-21, but the Greyhounds were able to run out the final 1:51 to end it.
