The Champion Chargers continued district play Friday on the road and, as in their previous three games, had the game well in hand before halftime, cruising past the Kyle Lehman Lobos, 59-3.
The Chargers averaged 59 points in their four games, scoring 236 points while yielding a meager 24 points defensively.
Things went south for the home team Lobos in a hurry. A nine-yard punt on fourth and 14 gave the Chargers excellent field position at the 25.
Champion quarterback Ryder Flugence threw a 3-yard touchdown run on first-and-goal following a facemask penalty on Lehman for the quick 7-0 lead.
Two plays later, Chargers defensive back Owen Kuhl came up with a tip-drill interception at the Lehman 18. Flugence then tossed a 19-yard scoring toss to wideout Zachary Lopez and following Will Hankins’ second extra point, Champion was up 14-0 with 7:37 to play in the first.
After a failed Lehman fourth-down conversion at the Champion 25, running back Caleb Farias took off on a 48-yard run, setting up his own 2-yard scoring run two plays later for the 21-0 lead at the 5:47 mark of the first.
Still in the first quarter, Champion capped a 5-play, 51-yard drive with a 20-yard Flugence touchdown pass to Axton White for the 28-0 lead.
Lehman’s quarterback was again robbed by Kuhl, again fielding a deflection off a Lehman receiver's hands. This time, however, he sprinted 30 yards with the pick-six interception touchdown. Champion led 35-0 with more than two minutes still left in the first quarter.
Champion tacked on two more touchdowns in the second quarter — a 3-yard Easton Hamel TD run and a 10-yard Flugence to William Burgess TD pass for a 49-0 score with 7:44 to play in the second quarter.
Champion added another touchdown and a field goal to wrap the scoring.
Champion (4-0, 2-0) hosts the Austin Anderson Trojans (3-0, 1-0) Friday in a battle of unbeatens, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. at Boerne ISD Stadium.
