Charger boys team finished second to advance to regionals

Boerne Champion competed at the district 26-5A golf tournament last week and had one of the boys teams qualify for regionals after they finished second.

The top two teams play at regionals, which is set for April 13-14 in McAllen and Chargers coach Jared Martin said his team played some clutch golf to get there.

“The boys battled back and forth all day, held their ground, and punched their ticket to the regional tournament,” he said.

The Chargers tallied a team score of 643 to finish second behind Smithson Valley (629). Champion was three strokes ahead of a second SV team (646).

Charger Jack Thomas shot 155 (81-74) to finish 5th and earn all-district honors. Gavin Tavitas-Steele tied for 11th with a 161 (80-81), Matthew Mendoza posted 162 (79-82) for 11th, Boden Bouslog shot 168 (85-83) for 24th and Cooper Relf came in at 173 (83-90) for 35th.

The second Charger boys team played well but didn’t advance.

“Our second team also showed up and competed hard,” Martin said.

Lane Hans scored a 170 (79-91), Collin Edwards shot 176 (89-87), Everett Christian posted a 179 (9089), Ryan Weaver finished with a 180 (90-90) and Oliver Christian scored a 189 (94-95).

Martin said it was a great tournament for the boys teams.

“We are so proud of the grit these young men showed and the class they conducted themselves with all year,” he said.

Varsity Girls The Lady Chargers wrapped up their season at the district tourney and finished 4th with a 694 at the Buckhorn in Comfort. Pieper (594) and three-time state champ Alamo Heights (628) were the two teams that advanced to regionals.

For the Chargers, Lily Musch posted a top-10 finish after she was ninth to earn all-district honors with a 157 (78-79). Sage Langenberg tied for 13th with a score of 166 (81-85), Marilyn Curd posted a 180 (90-90), Sophia Mazzu finished with a 191 (100-91), Nevaeh Burtis scored a 215 (110-105) and Rylynn Fenton wrapped it up with a 209 (107-102).

“I am so incredibly proud of this group,” Martin said. “A very special farewell to our amazing seniors – Sage and Marilyn – thank you for everything you've given to this team. You will be deeply missed.”
