Dinosaurs roam library in June, July events

THE BOOKWORM

Summer at the library begins

The library has completed one week of summer programming, and so far, it has been a huge hit! Our theme this year is “Unearth a Story,” and the primary characters are dinosaurs. They’re all over the library! We kicked off our dino-mite programming on Saturday, May 30.

For three hours, visitors were treated to lifelike dinosaurs provided by Jurassic SA. The opening party gave us the opportunity to get the word out about what we are offering. If you are intrigued, please stop by the library to pick up a copy of the calendar, or you can check our online calendar to get a more detailed description. Just visit our website at boernelibrary.org.

Summer Activity Challenge

Man, it’s a doozy this year -- People of all ages are welcome to sign up to participate in the challenge, which offers a huge variety of opportunities to collect dinosaur trading cards.

You can just stop by the youth department, or you can visit the adult desk on the second floor. They will get you started with all the supplies you need.

We understand that little ones will not be able to read on their own, but we are happy to give them cards for each book and activity their grownup is helping with. The last day to turn in your reading challenges will be July 24.

Speed puzzling competition

Speed puzzling has become a rapidly growing hobby and competitive activity, attracting participants of all ages. Individuals and teams race against the clock to complete jigsaw puzzles as quickly as possible, testing focus, strategy and teamwork.

Its popularity has surged through tournaments, social media communities and local library events.

Patrick Heath Library hosts several competitions a year, including 6-8 p.m. June 18; visit our online calendar at boernelibrary. org and find the calendar entry for June 18. Tap the RSVP button and register your team of four! The event is dinosaur themed and we will have food, fun and prizes for everyone.

Children’s programming

Each week during June and July, the younger crowd has a wide variety of offerings that will delight and entertain them.

Each Monday morning in June, kids can participate in unearthing information about dinosaurs as well as rocks. The first session takes place at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 8.

Families get the chance to meet and interact with incredible animals whose ancestors once roamed the Earth alongside the dinosaurs. They will have the ability to pet a giant python and tortoises, during this hands- on prehistoric adventure.

This program will take place on the library’s back lawn. All ages are welcome, and no registration is required.

Each Tuesday and Thursday, at 10 a.m., the babies up to age 2 and their grownups are invited to our Bubbletime Bookworms story times.

Children aged 2 to 5 are welcome to join our Roaring Readers story time at 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday.

Game nights

On Tuesday, June 23, at 5 p.m., get ready for a roaring good time at our Dino-Mite Game Night. Families and community members of all ages are invited to the library for an evening packed with dinosaur-themed games, laughter and friendly competition.

Whether you’re stomping your way through challenges or teaming up for prehistoric fun, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

On Tuesday, June 30 at 6 p.m., we serve up tabletop gaming for adults and teens with a focus on Mahjongg and Magic the Gathering. Bring your dinosaur-themed commander decks or RSVP for our Mahjongg instruction.

Library closure

On Friday, June 19, the library will be closed in observance of Juneteenth. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday marks the day in 1865 when news of emancipation reached enslaved people in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
