School-supply drive starting up
LOVE Kendall County Kids partners with firefighters
LOVE Kendall County Kids is teaming up again this weekend and next weekend with the Boerne Fire Department for its school supply drive.

The nonprofit will attempt to stuff as many donated back-to-school items in a fire truck and a school bus as possible, organizers said.
LOVE Kendall County Kids will be at the H-E-B, 420 W. Bandera Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 11 and Sunday, July 12 and July 18-19, accepting back-toschool items for children whose families may not be able to afford the supplies.
“This will be the first year the Boerne (Independent School District) will be collaborating with us, so we’re really excited about that,” said Shelly Leonard, LKCK executive director since April. “That partnership means we’ll have a school bus to ‘stuff’ at the H-E-B.”
This is the fourth year for the Fire Department to sponsor and man the school supply drive.
LKCK already participates with the Boerne ISD during its annual Back-To-School Resource Rally, which is set for July 25, so the pairing now delivers on both ends.
“The Boerne Fire Department brought in LKCK last year to make sure supplies are distributed where most needed,” Leonard said.
Last year, the agency was able to prepare 840 backpacks for kids returning to school. Leonard said LKCK has received more applications this year and expects participation to top at least 900, if not more.
Applications for the receipt of items are available on the agency’s website, www.lovekckids.org.
Among the most needed items for the academic year are: Ticonderoga #2 pre-sharpened pencils; composition notebooks, wide ruled; glue sticks, large and small; Expo dry erase markers, fine tip; Crayola colors, 12-count; Pink Pearl erasers; multi-color highlighters; Scotch tape rolls; colored pencils, 12-count; Crayola classic markers, wide tip; zipper pencil pouch, for binders; three-ring binders and dividers; and wide-ruled notebook paper.
Leonard said churches, other organizations and nonprofits donate the backpacks for the drive.
Last year, when the drive was short 100 backpacks, “the Boerne Fire Department used donated gift cards and bought us those,” Leonard said.
