Comfort eateries rate well with inspections

WHERE KENDALL COUNTY EATS: A CLOSER LOOK

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Boerne Star meets twice monthly with Kendall County Health Inspector Steven Kotsatos and his staff, to bring us our newest feature, “Where Kendall County Eats: A Closer Look.”

COMFORT — Check-ins conducted by the Kendall County health inspector found most Comfort restaurants operating at a high level of compliance this week, though some were directed to take corrective action for a few violations.

Inspection scores ranged from 81 to 100, with inspectors noting concerns involving food labeling, sanitation practices, equipment maintenance and proper food storage.

Comfort Pizza, 802 High St.

Hours: 11:30 a.m to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday The restaurant is known for its woodfired sourdough-style pizzas, including specialty pies and fresh salads, and is a popular destination for both residents and visitors exploring the Hill Country. Menu highlights include artisan pizzas, house-made dough creations and specialty toppings.

Hours: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday and closed Monday The shop offers espresso drinks, brewed coffee, pastries and breakfast items, with popular choices including specialty lattes, drip coffee and baked goods.

Inspector observations noted a coffee container needed to be placed on a base while filling to prevent potential contamination, and some items stored on lower crates were not properly labeled.

Both Hands Burger Bar, 713 High St.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4:30-8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday The fairly new establishment is known for Texas beef gourmet burgers such as the Benchmark, Wandering Cowboy, Armadillo, Scarface and Reaper, along with loaded green tomatoes and sweet potato fries.

The inspection noted a cooler needing a maintenance evaluation, chilled foods moved to a colder cooler within safe time limits, a missing thermometer in a front cooler, a hole in a storage area leading outside, an employee without a beard guard (corrected on-site), improperly stored wet wiping cloths and an ice scoop stored incorrectly.

Country Diner, 510 Texas 27

Hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday to Tuesday; closed Wednesday The country-inspired restaurant serves traditional homestyle meals including chicken-fried steak, burgers, breakfast platters, omelets and daily specials.

Inspector observations included weekly contracted deliveries, improper storage of opened canned goods, missing consumer advisory for undercooked foods, unlabeled coleslaw that was discarded, improperly protected liquid margarine, labeling issues with ingredients and pest control services.

Fajita St., 1004 Front St.

Hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday The restaurant specializes in Tex-Mex dishes such as fajitas, enchiladas, street tacos, quesadillas, burritos and breakfast tacos.

The health survey included improper hot holding of vegetables, raw and cooked beef stored uncovered together, chemicals not properly stored, missing consumer advisory, lack of a food thermometer, service sink used for storage, personal drinks in prep areas, improperly stored wiping cloths, food stored too close to the floor and improperly stored ice scoops.
