Boerne softball in shootout with Pearsall

The Boerne High softball team opened its 2024 season Tuesday with a home game against Pearsall and the contest turned into a shootout before the Lady Mavs prevailed, 17-14.

BHS starts the new year at 0-1 and is playing in the Ingram tournament this weekend. They beat Edison and tied Natalia on the first day of the tourney.

Boerne had a good lead in Tuesday’s game and was up 12-4 by the fifth inning but couldn’t hold it.

The Lady Hounds tallied 4 runs in the first, 2 in the second, 1 in the fourth and 5 in the fifth, while Pearsall scored 4 runs in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Mavs were just getting warmed up.

Pearsall had a big inning in the top of the sixth and scored 11 runs on its way to 15-12 lead. The Lady Mavs sent 16 batters to the plate and recorded 7 singles, 4 walks and 2 doubles to get its 11 runs.

Boerne tried to answer and plated a run in the bottom of the sixth and it was 15-13 when it went to the seventh frame.

Pearsall created some space in the top of the seventh with 2 more runs for the 17-13 lead. Boerne had to score 4 in the bottom of the seventh to tie or 5 to win but only mustered one run to fall 17-14.

The teams combined for 30 hits with each getting 15.

Ava Renteria had a good game at the plate for Boerne and hit a home run, a double and a single and also scored 4 runs and picked up 5 RBI.

Taylor Wilson hit 2 singles and scored twice, Breanna Krause doubled and hit 2 singles and scored 3 runs, Riley Partin doubled and hit 2 singles and scored twice, while Lizzy Thornton knocked out 4 hits and drove in 2 runs.

Payton Dyal went all seven innings in the circle and threw 171 pitches. She fanned 10 and walked 10.
