After a good start to district play with a runrule win over Wagner, the Lady Chargers softball team struggled in its next game at Veterans Memorial last Friday.

Champion scored 15 runs against Wagner, but only managed one run against the Lady Patriots and lost, 11-1, in six innings.

The Chargers are 7-6-2 overall and 1-1 in district. They were home for two games during spring break. Champion hosted New Braunfels Canyon Tuesday and then welcome Kerrville Tivy Thursday. Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m. because it’s spring break.

Despite getting run ruled last Friday by Veterans Memorial, it was close for most of the game. The Lady Patriots pulled away with two big innings late in the contest.

The Chargers took the early lead with a run in the top of the first, but were kept off the board the rest of the way.

Veterans Memorial fired back with 2 runs in the bottom of the second and added another run in the third for the 3-1 lead.

It held at 3-1 until the bottom of the fifth when the Lady Patriots busted the game open with 5 runs for the 8-1 advantage. They followed that up with 3 more runs in the sixth to kick in the mercy rule.

Veterans Memorial recorded 4 singles, 2 triples and a double to help push in those runs in during the fifth and sixth frames.

Champion finished with 3 hits after Abby Brehmer tripled, Torin Tucker doubled and Bella Mamadaliyev singled.

Tucker doubled to start the game and scored on the Brehmer triple.

Lillian Ritchie started in the circle and went 4.1 innings and struck out 3. Brehmer finished out the game and fanned 1.

Shalei Morn pitched for the Lady Patriots and didn’t walk a batter all night, while striking out 8.
