The Champion boys soccer team needed a win Friday to secure a playoff spot and they accomplished that goal and also wrapped up the No. 3 seed in the district with a 7-1 victory over Seguin.

Champion’s win over the Matadors helps the Chargers finish 26-5A action at 7-4-3 and end the regular season at 12-4-3 overall.

The Chargers were sitting at the fourth seed when the day started but because of their win and a Kerrville Tivy loss to Veterans Memorial, Champion moved up one spot, while New Braunfels Canyon took the No. 4 seed and Tivy’s loss drops them from the playoff picture.

Pieper won the district at 14-0, Smithson Valley is second at 8-4-2, Champion is third at 7-4-3 and Canyon is fourth at 7-5-2, while Tivy slipped to 7-6-1.

Veterans Memorial was close and ended the year at 6-6-2. Wagner and Seguin rounded out the district.

A win is worth three points and a tie is worth one point and there are no points for a loss, so Champion finished with 24 points, Canyon tallied 23 points and Tivy scored 22 points.

In last Friday’s game, Champion held a 3-0 lead at halftime and then scored four goals in the second half. The Chargers spread their goals around and scored both early and late in each half, with the last coming off a header on a corner kick with 10 minutes left.

Lucca Talos and Liam Willis tallied 2 goals apiece, while Grayson Moran, Brogan Dempsey and Bentley McCool knocked in single goals.

Dempsey had a big night and finished with 4 assists, while Matthew Duran, Moran and Nathan Bell all had 1 assist each.

NOTES: The Charger soccer teams are done with district play and open the playoffs March 25, but both the girls and boys teams will play New Braunfels High at Charger Field in warm up games Wednesday, March 20. The girls start at 5:30 and the boys begin at 7:15 p.m.
