Boerne Champion posted a 4-1 mark at the Liberty Hill tournament last weekend.
The Chargers are 12-4 overall and opened district play Tuesday at home against Wagner. They’ll play Alamo Heights in a non-district game Wednesday and then return to 26-5A action Friday by playing Wagner.
Champion opened the tourney with a 10-1 win over Hutto behind 14 hits.
It was a 1-1 game after the first inning and stayed that way until late when the Chargers scored 4 in the fifth and another 5 runs in the sixth.
Garland Whitehead doubled and hit 2 singles, drove in 2 runs and scored twice, Jordan Ballin doubled and singled, picked up an RBI and plated 2 runs, Owen Kuhl doubled and scored and Sam Miller doubled and singled and pushed in 2 runs.
Evan Kuhl singled and scored twice, Cam Logan hit 2 singles, scored twice and drove in a run, Gage Goldberg hit 2 singles and collected 2 RBI.
Sam Smith went 5.2 innings on the hill and picked up the win and Jacob Schwope closed it out. Smith fanned 6 and Schwope struck out 1.
The Chargers suffered their only loss of the tourney to Laredo United, 6-4.
Champion scored 2 in the top of the first and 2 in the fourth, but United had a big inning in the second with 4 runs and added 2 more in the fourth.
The Chargers finished with 5 hits, including a double by Quinn Grable, while Evan Kuhl hit 2 singles and scored.
Aidan Smith went 3.2 innings on the mound, while Jackson Melanson and Austin Garritano both threw in the game as well.
On Friday, the Chargers defeated host Liberty Hill, 8-3.
Champion opened the game with 3 runs in the first and never trailed after that. They added 3 more runs in the third for the 6-1 lead on a Sam Miller 3-run homer.
The Chargers knocked out 12 hits, including the home run by Miller. Jordan Balling tripled and scored, Evan Kuhl hit 3 singles, drove in 2 runs and scored once, Cam Logan knocked out 2 singles, pushed in a run and plated 3 runs, while Gage Goldberg and Quinn Grable both knocked out 2 singles in the game.
AJ Grazzaffi won the game and went 4 innings. Pearce Kelly earned the save and tossed the final 3 frames. Grazzaffi gave up 5 hits, 3 runs and sat down 4, while Kelly scattered 2 hits and struck out 3.
The Chargers won their last two games in blowout fashion, defeating Boyd, 14-0 and C.C. Ray, 15-1.
Champion recorded 11 hits against Boyd after Aidan Smith doubled and singled, drove in 2 runs and scored twice.
Evan Kuhl hit 3 singles, scored twice and picked up 4 RBI, Jordan Ballin hit 2 singles, scored twice and drove in a run and Quinn Grable singled, drove in a run and scored twice.
Matthew Booth went all 5 innings on the hill and scattered 2 hits, didn’t give up a run, walked 3 and struck out 2.
In the tourney finale, the Chargers banged out 8 hits and took advantage of 5 Ray errors to score its 15 runs.
Evan Kuhl singled and doubled and drove in a run, Jordan Ballin singled and scored twice, Gage Goldberg singled, scored and collected 2 RBI, Quinn Grable plated 2 runs and Austin Garritano scored twice.
Jackson Melanson tossed 3 innings and picked up the win. He gave up a hit, no runs and struck out 5, while Jacob Schwope threw an inning and fanned 3.
