A Boerne police dog killed in the line of duty last year will be among 23 canines honored during the seventh annual virtual Fallen K9 Memorial Run on National Police K9 Day Sept. 1. K9s United, a national nonprofit in Jacksonville, Fla., dedicated to supporting law-enforcement canines and their handlers, is inviting runners and walkers across the country to lace up their shoes to honor the police K9s who lost their lives in the line of duty last year.
“Each of these K9s answered the call without hesitation and stood beside their handlers until their last breath,” said Jay Nix, president of K9s United.
K-9 Chico of the Boerne Police Department perished in the line of duty April 10, 2025, following a traffic stop on Interstate 10, officials said.

“On National Police K9 Day, this run is our opportunity to honor their courage and sacrifice while ensuring their legacy lives on,” Nix said. “Whether you run, walk or simply participate in your own way, you’re helping recognize heroes who gave everything to protect our communities.”
The virtual event features a challenging 9K, a classic 5K and a 1-mile fun run. Participants of all ages and abilities are encouraged to register online by Aug. 10. Registration is $32 for children and $42 for adults, which includes a limited edition K9s United Fallen K9 Memorial Run T-shirt.
Chico’s death shortly after midnight followed a traffic stop in the parking lot of a gas station at Johns Road and Interstate 10, police said.
Suspecting the presence of narcotics connected to the vehicle, the officer called for assistance from a police K-9 unit. After Chico arrived, the dog sniffed and detected possible illicit substances.
Chico’s handler then put him inside the patrol vehicle and assisted with a search. Later, as the police auto began to leave the scene, the door “unexpectedly opened” when the locking mechanism did not properly latch, officials said.
Chico left the vehicle and ran toward the interstate.
Officers searching for Chico found him in the grassy median of the interstate suffering from injuries after being hit by a vehicle. The canine died not long after.
“We are heartbroken by this loss. K-9 Chico was a valued member of the department since November 2023,” Police Chief Steve Perez said at the time. “He was a loyal and courageous partner who served our department and community with honor, pride and dedication.”
