A new year, Asian style
The Asian or Lunar New Year, which gets underway February 1, was celebrated in style on Saturday morning at the Patrick Heath Public Library as a traditional dragon dance and the Chinese Culture Performance Association of San Antonio enterained a welcoming audience. The dragon dance was led by members of the Boerne chapter of the Young Men’s Service League and the Boerne chapter of the National Charity League as they paraded the celebratory dragon around the library and city hall property, including along Main Street, before heading inside the library to the Community Room. The Asian dancers performed three routines for attendees, all featuring elegant costumes and movements. Star photos by Keith E. Domke

1,000 books
Boerne’s Travis Shipman recently achieved the milestone of reading 1,000 books as part of the Patrick Heath Public Library’s Youth Department 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program. The nationwide program encourages parents to make reading a consistent part of their young children’s lives in an effort to promote literacy and parent-child bonding through reading. Shipman joined several other Boerne youngsters who have their names on the wall of the youth department as having achieved the goal. Shipman chose to receive the book “Just Saving My Money” by Mercer Mayer as his 1,000th book reward. Information from the family stated the 3-year-old’s favorite things to read about are construction vehicles, dinosaurs and airplanes. Submitted photo
